The 9th Green Image Film Festival

The total numbers of films applied for the 9th GREEN IMAGE FILM FESTIVAL were 87 films and 24 films are selected for the 1st preliminary.  At the 2nd preliminary, 10 films were selected for the GREEN IMAGE Award.
Those Green IMAGE Award winning films will be screened at the Green Film Festival held on 19th, 20th and 21st, March 2022. (Venue : Tokoharu Hall *3816-1, Matsudai, Tokamachi, Niigata, Japan/ Online streaming *domestic broadcasting only)

The Grand Prize GREEN IMAGE Award film will be selected through the 9th Green Image Film Festival and it will be announced on the last day of the festival.

The GREEN IMAGE FILM Committee had to make changes on dates of preliminaries according to COVID situations.
Therefore, we announce the GREEN IMAGE Award winning films and the result of 1st preliminary below.

The total numbers of films applied for the 8th GREEN IMAGE FILM FESTIVAL were 177 films from 43 countries and regions. And 23 films are selected for the 2nd preliminary. At the 2nd preliminary, 12 films were selected for the GREEN IMAGE Award. The12 GREEN IMAGE Award-winning films were shown at the 8th GREEN IMAGE FILM FESTIVAL from March 26 to 28. The GREEN IMAGE Grand Prize was chosen from the GREEN IMAGE Awards by the Review Committee on March 28.

”Mothers of the Land”

“Mothers of the Land” accompanies five women from the Andean highlands in their daily struggle to maintain a traditional and organic way of working the land. In the Andean Cosmovision, women and earth are strongly interrelated. Both, a women’s body and the earth’s soil are capable of giving and nurturing life. In the context of an ever-growing industrialization of agriculture, the use of chemical pesticides and genetically modified seeds, but it is women, who, connected to earth through bounds of sisterhood, take on the role of protectors.

“Kombinat”

Magnitogorsk is an industrial town, in the heart of Russia that lives in the shadow of its gigantic combine’s rusting smokestacks. Lena, a young mother, daughter of steel workers, teaches salsa, one of the many activities organized by the Kombinat. Sasha found a way to escape from the daily pressure in the steel plant. His Brother, Guenia, and his wife have decided to leave the town and its permanent pollution, the cause of their daughter’s mental handicap.

“Bearman of Hokkaido”

Shiretoko area in Hokkaido has been registered as a World Natural Heritage Site for 15 years. In the innermost depths of Shiretoko, there is a densely populated area of brown bears called Rusha and the film recorded the life of something no one in the world had never been seen before for over 36 year period that is coexistence of brown bears with human being. The main character of the film is the one and only old fisherman in the world who scolds and drives away wild brown bears. Through his lifestyle, the film illustrate Japanese unique view of nature that “human beings are only a part of the nature”. I think this is an indispensable idea for building up a sustainable society.

At the 2nd preliminary, 14 films were selected for the GREEN IMAGE Award. These 14 GREEN IMAGE Award-winning films were shown at the 7th GREEN IMAGE FILM FESTIVAL from February 21 to 23. Thank you for always supporting the GREEN IMAGE FILM FESTIVAL. As you know, the risk of coronavirus infection is increasing rapidly in Japan. At our 7th GREEN IMAGE FILM FESTIVAL, we are paying the utmost attention to this matter and will operate according to the following policies (until further notice). We apologize for the inconvenience, but with the objective of protecting the health of our community members in mind, we appreciate your understanding and cooperation in advance.
 
・ If you are unwell, have symptoms of cough and/or fever, follow the published guidelines (by the government/authorities) for Corona virus prevention, and we ask that you respectfully do not participate in-person at our event.
 
・ Please be sure to follow proper etiquette such as washing/sanitizing your hands and covering your mouth as you cough during our event.
 
・We assumes all rights to confront and assist anyone who participates when showing symptoms such as frequent coughing, sneezing, and general fatigue (signs of being unwell), and may end in escort out of the event.
 
・ Our program will be reviewed periodically and in a timely manner, taking into account the spread of infection, and other sources. At the 2nd preliminary, 14 films were selected for the GREEN IMAGE Award. GREEN IMAGE FILM FESTIVAL participates in the 1st International Forum of Environmental Film Festivals in Portugal

Green Image Film Festival is one of the 38 environmental film festivals from around the world that will participate in the 1st International Forum of Environmental Film Festivals, to be held in Seia, Portugal, from October 13th to 15th.

The Forum, organized by CineEco 2018 and the Green Film Network (GFN), is part of the 24th edition of environment film festival in Portugal, and is supported by Center Portuguese Tourism.

During these three days, the festivals will debate common issues, strengthen ties and promote reflection on the importance of audiovisual platforms that stimulate social and sustainability changes.

This forum will be held with the presence of 38 film festival directors from 28 different countries: Albania, Argentina, Austria, Brazil (3), Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, France (3), Germany (3), India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kosovo, Malaysia, Mexico, Montenegro, Romania, Russia, Serbia, South Korea, Spain (2), Switzerland, Turkey, United States of America (3) and Portugal.

The presence of international speakers from “these and other countries” will be important to discuss environmental and sustainability issues focused on cinema, communication and art.

The 1st World Forum of Environmental Film Festivals will take place in Seia, Serra da Estrela, a mountainous tourist region associated with nature tourism, local products and cultural events highlighting local cultures.
